APRIL 7, 2009

The April 7, 2009 meeting of the Dade Chapter of the FSMTA was a memorable presentation by Eaton Dunn on a serious topic; HIV-Aids. A required course for the renewal of licenses this year. It was the most informative and interesting class many of us had ever had the privilege to experience. Mr. Dunn, with his earthy wit, kept our interest while  passionately presenting what is usually a cut and dry topic. He made a strong case for the of importance sex education in combating sexually transmitted diseases. The Touch Research Institute has been a leader in documenting the importance of touch on those suffering from Aids. Massage stimulates the immune system and gives the patient a significant and verifiable boost in their fight. Donations were collected for St. Jude's hospital. as well. The class was held at Educating Hands School of Massage.

MARCH 3, 2009

On Tuesday, March 3,2009 the Dade Chapter of the FSMTA held their monthly meeting at Educating Hands School of Massage. The meeting began with announcements by the RoseAnne Eliasson, president regarding membership and the schedule speakers for the rest of the year. James Waslaski being the key note speaker in the fall. The evening's main speaker, Ed Wilson, well known for teaching Reflexology, presented the required 2 CEU course on LAW. He familiarized members to the licenses required by therapists while conducting their business around town. Did you know a therapist needs a city license from each municipality she or he works in? Even if just there for an hour....so says the law. Also Ed spoke about the credits required for license renewal this year. 12 hours of classroom study, Ethics, Law, HIV and Medical Errors, 2 hrs. each. The Board met afterwards for a short meeting to discuss the upcoming CPR workshop the chapter will be offering soon. Refreshments were pot luck. The meeting was well attended.

FEBRUARY 3, 2009

The Dade Chapter of the FMSTA met at Educating Hands for a stimulating presentation of Medical Errors (2 CEU'S provided). Iris Burman refers to the subject as "Practice Errors" which is better framed for our profession. The evening took on a personal tone as Ms. Burman invited the group to share personal experiences relating to the subject. She also revealed her own learning curves from her early days in the profession. We talked about the upcoming convention  July 8-12 to be held in Orlando. The theme for the convention is the 70th Anniversary! 1939-2009.Reservations for rooms at the Omni Orlando Resort are going fast. So it is encouraged to make plans to attend early.

Refreshments were served but there was no time for raffle. The meeting was well attended.

JANUARY 6, 2009

~~This is a license renewal year which can now be done online; as well as renewal of the chapter membership.
~~As is customary, the chapter will offer the needed CRU's in the coming months, at its monthly meetings.
~~Plans for the next convention in Jyuly, were also mentioned.

The evening main event was the presentation by Renee Romero, RN, LMT. She first gave us a tour of the Lymphadema Institute and explained to us the scope of the work done there. It is a clean, spacious, well equipped facility offering Dolphin Reiki Treatments and classes, Lymphatic Drainage for a myriad of ailments........bandages
to improve circulation, ease pain, treat wounds and more. She demonstrated a lympathic treatment for the head and neck, to be used for colds, sinus, acne as well as facelifts. All members received 2 Free CEU's.

GREAT MEETING!

NOVEMBER 4, 2008

The Dade FAMTA held its monthly meeting at Educating Hands at 7:00pm. Their was already an excitement in the air, as we were awaiting the Presidential Election results. However, our attention was captivated by the presentation given by Dr. Michael Shea on "Embryology and the Therapeutic Relationship". Dr. Shea talked about the non-verbal communication between a fetus and its mother. Also between the therapist and your client during a massage treatment. Thought stirring information.........The meeting ended at 9:25pm. All members who attended received 2 CEU's. Non-members paid $20.

Tickets for the Holiday party next were sold at a discount. The party will be held at Siam Lotus Room in South Miami on the first Tuesday in December (in place of our meeting). Tickets are $25 per person. See you there!!!

OCTOBER 7, 2008

The Dade Chapter of the FSMTA met at Educating Hands School of Massage. Considering it was the same night as a Presidential Debate and that we were not giving CEU's, the turnout was respectful. RoseAnne Eliasson, chapter president, opened the meeting at 7:15pm. Among the items she discussed was that next year our license renewal will be done Online. Therapists will receive the usual renewal reminder postcard with instructions. She wanted to congratulate fellow member, Jeff Brown for passing his state board exams. She offered two locations, either Miccousukee or Siam Lotus Thai Restaurant, for the Christmas party to the group for a vote. The Thai restaurant won as most people felt that a small, cozier party place on the same night that we normally hold the meeting seemed more appealing. The Christmas Party is scheduled then on December 2, 2008, the first Tuesday of the month.

The topic for the night was Breast Health Awareness. We heard from three speakers. Dean Ganelli from American Quality of Life Insurance introduced us to Life and Disability Insurance Programs for those in the profession. Mae Whitehead, outreach coordinator for the Y-Me Breast Cancer Network of Strength, demonstrated the proper way to do breast self exams. She was a caring and sincere voice of education to the public on the importance of early detection and mammograms. Lastly, Nelly L. Yefet, AP, gave us a different perspective on breast health. She believes that abnormalities can be detected before they are ever large enough to be seen on a mammogram through thermography or thermal imaging. She spoke about how cancers can be reversed through lifestyle changes in nutrition and self care. Antiperspirants are among one of the dangerous chemicals to be avoided. The excessive use of soybeans could also prove to be harmful. Angel Orosco, LMT, owner of Bodysense Spa, also spoke about nutrition as a helpful reversal. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:45pm.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2008

Our monthly meeting was held at Educating Hands School of Massage. RoseAnne Eliasson, president, opened the meeting at approximately 7:15pm. Debra Jaffe, one of Don McCann's graduates, introduced our main speaker, Don McCann. It was an amazing demonstration on Structural Energetic Therapy. He will be presenting a two-day workshop in January. See Flyer under Events on this Web site.We look forward to seeing you all at the October meeting.

August 5, 2008

The Dade Chapter of the FSMTA held its monthly meeting at Educating Hands School of Massage. RoseAnne Eliasson, president, opened the meeting with a brief summary of the Annual FSMTA Convention in July. Goody Bags from the convention were given to all.Elise De Falco, L.M.T., gave a presentation on Color and Sound Therapy which she uses to enhance the benefits of massage therapy. The Psychology of Color was discussed along with references to Mitchell Gaynor's book "The Power of Sound". The effects of sound are as varied as raising the listener's IQ and others. Two CEU's were given to those who attended. We broke up into small groups determined by our favorite colors. Later we learned what our color preferences meant. Ms. De Falco ran out of time, therefore, we did not learn about the Sound Therapy Portion of her presentation. The meeting ended soon after 9:00pm.

After the meeting, Iris Burman invited everyone to come the following day for a free 2 credit talk on Tibetan Bowl Massage. A few of us were able to make this fascinating class. Did you know that sound from the bowls create healing on a molecular level? The bowls are tapped while on the body, allowing for the vibrations to travel throughout, stirring energy patterns.

June 3, 2008

Our monthly meeting was held at "Educating Hands School of Massage".Volker Frank Sperlich, a professional laugh therapist, managed to get the entire room of LMT's, laughing. The point was to remember that laughter is a proven healer. As busy Therapists, we probably forget its importance or find time and a reason to laugh. Our time was a delightful change of form from the normal structured meeting. We were laughing at and with each other. In the bathroom, I heard a Massage Student say to her friend in a sad voice, "We didn't have that class"! Thanks to Lisa Goodkind for suggesting the topic. Also worth mentioning was Anna Panaro's imitation of a chicken. (Her Acting Classes paid off).A 50/50 cash raffle was awarded to a student guest. We hope she joins the chapter.

The rest of the meeting was focused on preparing for the convention, from July 2nd to July 6th at The Boca Raton Resort and Hotel. We look forward to seeing you there.

May 6, 2008

Our monthly meeting was held at "Educating Hands School of Massage". Our President, RoseAnne Elisasson, opened the meeting with an April Fool's joke to warm up the attending members. We laughed! You had to be there!!!

It was reported that Sam Campano, the State Massage Therapist Association's Webmaster was in a coma following a motorcycle accident last month. Our prayers are requested for Sam and his wife. We look forward to some good reports in the future.

Anna Panaro, 1st Vice President, asked for ideas from members regarding the Chapter's Web Site. Contributions are welcome. Contact her at: apanaro@bellsouth.net.

We are urging all members to "GET INVOLVED" by forming and working on various committees which will benefit the chapter and it's members.

It was decided that a list of available therapists will be formulated to keep our therapists on call for more employment. Your name will appear on the list ONLY with your consent. This will be a Special Committee.

Victor Francs, LMT spoke on AquaBliss Technigues. Two FREE CEU's were granted to all who attended.

At our May meeting, David Gonzalez, 2nd Vice President, will be teaching on Sports Massage. David is also State Sports Massage Coordinator and we are fortunate to have him teaching this up and coming class. Cost: $65 at the door and $50 if prepaid, to be received no later than April 30th.

Refreshments were served. We had a great time!

Refreshments were served. A good time was had by all.

February 5, 2008

FSMTA Dade Chapter hosted it's first monthly meeting of the year. It was held at Florida College of Natural Health. Its focus was to honor the past Board of Directors, Past President Richard Weir and 1st & 2nd Vice Presidents, Michael Langlois and Bruce Baltz consecutively.
